PIPELINE INTEGRITY · LEAK QUANTIFICATION · ENVIRONMENTAL ASSESSMENT
IDEA-H₂
IDEA-H₂ investigates the reuse of natural-gas pipelines for hydrogen, connecting material integrity, leak monitoring and the environmental consequences of hydrogen releases.

RESEARCH FOCUS
Utrecht’s contribution.
Developed through Pathways to Sustainability, the project defines an interdisciplinary research agenda for pipeline reuse and leakage assessment.
- Assess material and operational challenges, including material-dependent embrittlement.
- Evaluate whether monitoring approaches can both detect and quantify hydrogen leaks.
- Connect release information with environmental assessment and mitigation needs.
Collaboration with RIVM supports this feasibility agenda. Leak detection, release quantification and environmental impact remain distinct research questions; the project does not claim a validated detector or completed field trial.
