IDEA-H2

IDEA-H2: Innovative Detection and Environmental Assessment of Hydrogen Leakage in Natural Gas Pipelines aims to investigate the feasibility of using existing natural gas pipelines for hydrogen transport and distribution, focusing on identifying technical challenges and developing strategies to detect and minimize hydrogen leaks and their environmental impacts.

  • Technical Challenges: Identify and address issues such as material brittleness that could risk pipeline integrity.
  • Leak Detection: Develop and test strategies to detect hydrogen leaks using existing monitoring technologies.
  • Environmental Assessment: Evaluate the potential environmental impact of hydrogen leakage.

A Pathways to Sustainability Signature Project, IDEA-H2 will provide insights into the technical and environmental challenges of using natural gas pipelines for hydrogen transport. The project will develop strategies to minimize environmental impacts, contributing to a safe, sustainable, and cost-effective hydrogen economy. Collaboration with RIVM highlights the project’s importance and potential impact.
